Okay. Obsession time. Let’s guess what all of these amazing women have in common. Yeah- they are all they are all in their late twenties and have amazing vocals. Yes, it always comes back around to music. These are the females that I can just jam out to and believe in myself.
1. Let’s start with Marina. Love her. I adore her because she is so versatile. She can go from girly, to edgy, to classic and back. I like her voice. It’s soft but can get up and yell at you if she feels like it. I love her accent and the fact that she embraces her background. Love her HAIR. She’s like a settled Madonna- that’s exactly what she is. Everyone says that people are just a image as someone who went before them. She is Madonna then. My favorite song of her’s has to be… of course Primadonna. Only because it basically describes me as a person- it’s kinda scary how it says “Take a picture, I’m with the boys. Get what I want ’cause I ask for it. Not because I’m really that deserving of it.” and “All I ever wanted was the world. I can’t help that I need it all. The primadonna life, the rise and fall. You say that I’m kinda difficult. But it’s always someone else’s fault.” This is me. I blame everything on someone else. This woman changes her look everyday- she’s got a little Gaga in her too I think.
2. Where do I even start with Lana Del Rey? he is truly amazing. My sister and I can;t get enough of her. Whenever her H&M commercial comes on the world go’s silent… at least in our house. I love her look- I love her sound. Every single one of her songs is so different. God, she is an angel. Her voice is so delicate but then it can get a little stronger and scare you for a minute. Her lyrics are pure and meaningful. Not to mention her ever present references to drugs. She has that iconic look. Why wasn’t she born in the sixties? She has such an impact. There is so much emotion in her music, especially in songs like “Summertime Sadness” and “Carmen”. She has this fresh, classic, girly feel to her style. My favorite song of her’s is a tie between “Born To Die” and “Blue Jeans- Gesaffelstein Remix”. I like the lyrics of “Born to Die” which say “Sometimes love is not enough and the road gets tough. I don’t know why.” I love Lana. She is as real as it gets. Some of my other favorite lyrics of her’s are “Kiss me hard before you go Summertime sadness I just wanted you to know That, baby, you’re the best.” and “You’re no good for me Baby you’re no good for me You’re no good for me But baby I want you, I want Diet mountain dew, baby, New York City Never was there ever a girl so pretty Do you think we’ll be in love forever? Do you think we’ll be in love?” Yet again, her voice. It’s so delicate, so persistent.
3. Florence Welch. The girl with the voice- the girl that can sing you into heaven. Florence’s music is gorgeous, you can really feel a raw unique emotion in each on her songs. I adore her hair- that red… I love her style because it kind of reminds me of a witch (in a good way), the long black sheer dress, and the flowing high waisted skirts. Now she has some music. There was the big love for Florence + the Machine in 2011 which no one honestly understood. I have to say- I just liked her music because everyone else did until one day I was listening to music on my tv while sewing a skirt and “What the Water Gave Me” came on. The music video got me. I was so inspired that I sewed yet another skirt. Her music just has that enchanting effect on you.
My favorite song of her’s has to be “Rabbit Heart (Raise it up)” I recently fell in love with the song and now it has me under a spell. I love the beat, that intense drum, it says “And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As towards the sky I offer it This is a gift, it comes with a price Who is the lamb and who is the knife?”. I just let it take over, I don’t know…I just love her.
My other favorite of her’s is “No light, No light.” I can relate to this one first class. She sings “You are the hole in my head You are the space in my bed You are the silence in between what I thought And what I said You are the night time fear You are the morning when it’s clear When it’s over you’ll start You’re my head You’re my heart No light, no light in your bright blue eyes I never knew daylight could be so violent A revelation in the light of day You can’t choose what stays and what fades away And I’d do anything to make you stay No light, no light No light Tell me what you want me to say Through the crowd, I was crying out And in your place there were a thousand other faces I was disappearing in plain sight Heaven help me, I need to make it right You want a revelation, You wanna get it right But, it’s a conversation, I just can’t have tonight You want a revelation Some kind of resolution You want a revelation.” Florence explains it oh so well.
By now- you might just understand what kind of music I like, if not- wait for my next post.
